The word floats. A polished demo can feel like AGI. A lab can say it already has “a form of AGI,” depending on the definition. The models on the desk all answer the same locked definition, so the clock is not a circus.
1. OpenAI charter (economic). Highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work. A labour-market test. It does not require a body, consciousness, or beating every scientist.
2. DeepMind / Morris levels (ladder). Performance and generality, like driving levels: Emerging (today’s chatbots) → Competent (median skilled adult on a wide set of tasks) → Expert / Exceptional → Superhuman. Public systems are still in Emerging, maybe touching Competent in a few skills.
3. Classic / hard AGI (autonomy) — this is the definition the desk uses. A system that can learn a new domain the way a competent human can, then do long-horizon work without a babysitter: new science, new tools, messy software, physical or economic projects, recovery from its own mistakes. Not a polished demo. Not a benchmark win. Can it be dropped on a novel job for days and not fall over?
